How do I wash/shampoo my hair?
This might seem like a pretty basic one but having witnessed my children attempt to do this very task I don’t think that this is one that comes naturally to many of us. In fact, it often takes our apprentices quite a few attempts to shampoo a head of hair perfectly, as we have to ensure they have got all the tricky spots. Like that spot right in the middle at the back that always seems to be missed! So here is my breakdown of how to do an amazing shampoo for that fresh salon clean feel at home.
Steps for the Perfect Wash
1.Wet your hair thoroughly. Dry spots will make it harder for the shampoo to foam up so really get that hair wet!
2. Squeeze out a blob of shampoo that’s approximately 1 – 1.5cm in diameter. That’s about the size of a 10c coin.
3. Rub your hands together to start to emulsify the shampoo. This will help it spread further.
4. When the shampoo has just started to foam, spread it over your whole scalp. Don’t worry about the ends of your hair, unless you have tons of product in them.
5. Use your finger tips to gently lift your hair to make sure there is some of the shampoo everywhere on your scalp. This includes that tricky patch in the middle of the back of your head, behind your ears, and your front and back hairline.
6. Using spread out fingers, scrub your whole scalp with as much pressure and speed as is comfortable for you. Pay close attention to those tricky spots mentioned in step 5. Do this for at least 1 minute.
7. Rinse. Make sure you have no shampoo leftover in your hair.
8. For very dirty or product heavy hair repeat steps 2-7 one or two more times. You will know if you need to repeat by how much your shampoo foams in your hair. If it hardly foams, repeat. If it foams well, move on to step 9.
9. Squeeze out some of the water in the ends of your hair in preparation for conditioner. In direct contrast to shampoo, conditioner works best if the hair isn’t extremely wet. Excess water with dilute your product too much, making it less effective.
10. Place a blob of conditioner in your hand. The size of the blob will depend on your hair length. Use about 1cm for short, 1.5cm for medium and up to 2.5cm for long or very thick hair.
11. Rub the conditioner between your hands to spread it and place it on the ends of your hair. Use a comb or spread out fingers to ensure the product is evenly distributed. Leave for 1-5 mins depending on your product.
12. Rinse well. Congratulations, you now have beautifully clean hair!
