Sustainability and Hair – A perfect match.
When you hear the phrase “Sustainable Salon”, what comes to your mind? Most likely you are thinking a sustainable salon must do a bit of recycling, maybe source some “green” products and possibly has some sort of water reduction process in place. And you would be right! These are all definitely things we do at Bach Hair to reduce our environmental impact. However, you might be surprised to hear and see just how much we do as a Sustainable Salon to reduce our waste.
Now for those that are new to the concept, Sustainable Salons is an Australian/New Zealand organisation that allows salons to recycle up to 95% of their salon waste. The waste collected by the Sustainable’s team is then recycled and reused in various ways to ensure as little as possible is actually wasted. Bach Hair, Leading the Way.
Bach Hair has always searched for ways to be an industry leader when it comes to environmentally friendly practices. So when the burgeoning Sustainable Salons organisation popped up, Bach Hair was an early adopter. But that’s not the end of the story for our environmental impact here at Bach Hair. From solar powered electricity and water reducing tap heads to yummy, locally sourced biscuits provided by a not-for-profit supporting disability employment, Bach Hair is ready to do whatever we can to find new environmentally conscious practices.
Which is why we went straight to our favourite thrifter, Hannah https://www.instagram.com/nevereverpayretail/, when we needed fashion for our most recent photoshoot. Because nothing says sustainability like reusing fashion!
Fashion Forward, not Fashion backward.
It’s estimated that around 330,000 tonnes of textile are wasted in Australia every year. Unlike the hair industry, which is making great strides into waste reduction, the textile/clothing industry is yet to invest in a consistent system to create a circular economy. Repurposing and re-using clothing is the way forward, which is exactly what we did with our recent ‘Local Icons’ photoshoot.
Sourcing pre- loved clothing is not only sustainable in that we are saving textiles from landfill. By purchasing from charity shops we are also helping to support those in need. This photoshoot is named ‘Local Icons’. Not just because all the locations we used are local Red Hill/ Paddington icons. Or because Bach Hair has been a local business for over 40 years. It’s because we are leading the charge to reduce our environmental impact whilst still always making an impact with our hair. And there is nothing more iconic than that.
